Generally spoken, a scar is a mark, that is left behind in the skin by healing of a wound, while the normal functional tissue, the skin, gets replaced by a connective tissue, the scar. As for acne scars, the wound is caused by the body’a inflammatory response to sebum, bacteria and dead cells, that are trapped in the plugged sebaceous glands
Once the skin tissue gets hurt by any kind of wound, the body will try to heal the injured part in increasing the leukocytes in this region together with inflammatory molecules that serve to cure the wounded tissue and battle infection. Once their job is done, they might leave a messy area, in form of fibrous scar tissue or eroded tissue, behind. The white blood cells and inflammatory molecules might stay in the area of an active wound for several days or even weeks. For people, who are more fragile to scarring, the outcome might be an acne scar.
But remember, that everybody’s skin is different and works in a different way. Oftentimes, severe inflammatory nodulocystic acne, that happens deep in the skin, leads to acne scars. But for those people who are more prone to scarring, acne scars also might result from more superficial inflamed lesions.
